Gondar

, also known as Gondar, is a city located in the North Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region in Ethiopia. It is situated north of Lake Tana and southwest of the Simien Mountains. Historically, Gonder served as the capital of the Ethiopian Empire from the 17th to the 19th century and was the capital of the Begemder Province. The city is renowned for its royal castles, including those in the Fasil Ghebbi UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has earned it the nickname “Camelot of Africa.”

Gonder is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the opportunity to explore crumbling castles and beautiful churches. Some of the notable attractions include Fasilidas’ Castle, which is the oldest and most impressive structure within the Royal Enclosure, and Fasilides’ Bath, which retains a function today as a pool.
